Coached football for 30 years, 12 of those at Russellville, with five state championships and numerous awards and honors to his credit. His 28-year record as a head coach is 173-104-6. His Russellville teams enjoyed a 41-game unbeaten string. He coached in two all-star games and served as president of the high school coaches association. State Champions Class A 1953 District 4 Champion 1953 Winston County Champions 1953, 1952, 1949 Graduate of Jacksonville State University Member of Winston County Sports Hall of Fame Inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame Class of 1998. Coached football for 26 years, produced state championship teams at three different high schools—Winston County in 1953, Roanoke in 1955 and Cullman in 1962, and compiled a career coaching record of 179-65-8. His longest tenure was 15 years at Cullman where his teams went 106-40-6 and he was state Class 4A coach of the year in 1962. He served as president of the AHSAA coaches association. 1933-1936 Coach Grady A. Gilbert 10 - 6 - 4* Graduate of Samford University Enlisted in the Army May 12 1942. He attended high school in Boaz and received his diploma and degree at Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham where he was known for his basketball, track, football and baseball activities. Grady was an aircraft engine mechanic with the Ninth Air Force. After induction, Sgt Gilbert was sent to basic training at Ft. McPherson, Georgia, then to the Air Forces school for aircraft mechanics, Keesler Field, Mississippi and the Henry Ford aircraft engine school, Dearborn, Michigan. Before leaving for overseas duty in October 1943, he was stationed at Harding Field, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sgt Gilbert was killed when his plane crashed November 1st 1944 and he is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 21st Squadron, 91st Air Depot Group. A true Alabama hero of War World II.
